This is one of the stranger things I’ve found in a book, but I like thinking about who put it there and why. Was this book the only handy paper when someone was trying to get David’s attention – or maybe a note passed to someone on the phone? The book scout at my old bookstore was a David – so maybe someone wanted to mark it for him to look at. On the other hand, David is a fairly common name – and I’m not sure why one of us would write directly in the book, so that theory falls a little flat. What do you think? Any theories?
I collected dozens of these types of dedications when I worked at a used bookstore, and I still keep an eye out for them when I’m browsing second-hand books. Now you can find a new dedication here every Friday. See the complete list here!
