Dedications: Nothing against America!

Debra Watkins

’95’
Dear Dad,

Happy Christmas!
– Nothing against America
– I’d buy you it even if it was about Venice!!
all my love
Karen
xx

This dedication was sent to me by Debra Watkins – she said, “I believe this is my only book that has an inscription, but I always look when I buy used books. I bought this 3-4 years ago and this inscription was made in 1995 and seems to be from someone who didn’t live in the United States.”

For some reason I thought Bill Bryson was Canadian – but then again, maybe I just assume everyone is Canadian.

I love the point form justification for choosing this book as a gift, and I feel like so much of this father / daughter relationship comes through in just a few lines – good-natured ribbing and a lot of love.

I collected dozens of these types of dedications when I worked at a used bookstore, and I still keep an eye out for them when I’m browsing second-hand books. Now you can find a new dedication here every Friday. See the complete list here!

Have any of your previously loved books come with notes from past owners? Send them my way!
