Dedications: tangled handwriting

To Susan,
Whose own mind grows along with her students’ brains!
June Hay

This was a tricky one – just look at that handwriting! I enlisted the help of my friend and fellow blogger Katie (who has helped me with deciphering dedications before) and also my mom (who has a sharp eye, beautiful cursive, and a lot more practice with handwriting than I do). In the end I think we figured it out. I just hope Susan didn’t have the same trouble we did.

I forget which book I found this in – I really should have written the titles down as I collected the dedications – but I had it in my head that it was a music book by Oliver Sacks. Considering Musicophilia wasn’t published until 2007, and this dedication is dated 1963, I have a feeling that isn’t the case.

Have you ever bought a book as a thank-you for a teacher? What did you pick?

I collected dozens of these types of dedications when I worked at a used bookstore, and I still keep an eye out for them when I’m browsing second-hand books. Now you can find a new dedication here every Friday. See the complete list here!

Have any of your previously loved books come with notes from past owners? Send them my way!
