Cover to Cover with Neuromancer

Mass Market_BoringIt’s time for another science fiction cult classic: William Gibson’s Neuromancer.

Some fun facts about this book:

  • It was the inspiration for The Matrix films
  • It was written by a Canadian
  • It has a lot of campy – and wonderful – covers

This cover (left) is the edition that I own – and I quickly realized it’s probably the most boring of the lot.

I mean, check out these beauties:

Kindle edition     Mass Market edition II     Mass Market edition

There are also some great (and slightly more modern-looking) foreign editions:

Italian Edition II     Italian Edition    Japanese edition

Portuguese edition  Portuguese edition - 30th anniversary    Romanian Edition

From left to right and top to bottom: Italian edition, alternate Italian edition, Japanese edition, Portuguese edition, 30th anniversary Portuguese edition, and Romanian edition. (I feel as though I should do a week of just Portuguese covers, because they’re consistently my favourites.)

As ever, some intriguing editions from graphic designers:

A. Gregory redesign David Simpson redesign Nicholas BeauJouan

From left to right: covers from Avery Gregory, David Simpson, and Nicolas Beaujouan. The minimalist cover has to be my favourite – I’m a huge, huge sucker for minimalism. This cover in particular brings Neuromancer back down to the bare bones: layers on layers on layers.

Which cover is your favourite? I’d love to see your comments. Feel free to link to any great cover art that I’ve missed!

  1. So, that’s where my book went… and, the only reason the cover is “the most boring” is because a) it’s probably close to being a first edition, and b) this was Gibson’s breakout novel. Who was going to spend a lot of time and money coming up with a fancy cover for a newbie scifi guy?
